Abstract

One new mesogenic homologous series of phenytoin base ester the following general formula have been synthesized. The molecular structures of the synthesized phenytoin base ester compounds were characterized by the standard spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis.

Phenytoin base ester prepared by condensing 4-n alkoxy benzoic acid[A] with phenytoin[B] by esterification method. Phenytoin[B] synthesized by condensing benzil and urea in the presence of an alcoholic basic medium. Phenytoin is a major effective an anticonvulsant medicine that is very good in controlling a wide variety of seizure disorders while impairing neurological and hypothesis that the medicine effects were due to a selective block of high frequency neuronal activity

 

The mesomorphic behaviour of these new phenytoin base ester was mainly investigated with the help of optical polarizing microscope. For some representative compounds investigated by IR, NMR and differential scanning calorimetric study was carried out to support the optical observation of transition temperatures and associated enthalpies. In this series, lower members are nematic-mesophase, whereas higher members exhibit smectic mesophase. In this series, we want to study phase transition as well as effective an anticonvulsant and related activity. Phenytoin liquid crystalline derivative is may be use intravenously as a first-line treatment for status epilepticus.
